Adrian Parrish, Kentucky Youth Soccer Association’s Technical Director, looks forward to the return of the Soccer Learning University as he and his team aim to help soccer grow and thrive in the commonwealth and beyond.
“Unifying our clubs more and getting more people working together more is the most important issue facing Kentucky youth soccer,” Parrish said.
KYSA’s second annual Soccer Learning University, scheduled Saturday at the Lexington Center, brings together coaches, players, referees and parents to learn and share their knowledge about the beautiful game and help seize on its growing momentum in America.
The event will include a number of presenters who will be talking about best practices to help coaches coach, players develop, clubs organize and parents support their children.
“There is a market for everyone and you need to know what you are in the market,” said Parrish. “If you are focused on developing players, then that’s great, and if you are trying to win cups, then you need the best players.”
Bringing together perspectives from recreational and club organizations will not only help improve their teams, it will also provide a better environment for their players to develop, Parrish said.
“Events like this will help us unify,” Parrish said. “We (KYSA officials) aren’t here just for the state tournament and cup. We are here for people 365 days of the year. I love the game and want people to grow.”
Last year was the first for SLU and its success inspired KYSA to put more on its to-do list for this session.
“In addition to an incredible group of presenters, we are excited to share this event with a growing number of attendees,” said Holly Kirkpatrick, KYSA Programs and Marketing Assistant.
Among the 18 speakers scheduled are:
- Karla Thompson with U.S. Soccer, who will talk about the future of U.S. Soccer coaching education;
- Simon Almaer of Premier Sports Psychology, with will speaking coaching for a “growth mindset;
- Kelvin Jones, U12 Academy head coach for Columbus Crew FC, who will talk about how to get the most out of random play or “street ball.”
