LYSA emphasizes free play in the early years from 5U through 8U will small-sided 4 v 4 games. That means more touches, more goals, less standing around and more fun.
“The players enjoy it more, so the games are more competitive and exciting,” said Cary Tsamas, LYSA’s Director of Coaching.
Tsamas, a youth soccer coach in Central Kentucky for many years, has led programs at Sayre High School, Berea College and Lexington FC, LYSA’s select soccer program. He’s a big believer in the benefits of small-sided games.
“They have less space to operate in, so they are forced to move and run with more purpose and play quicker,” he said. “And of course there are more touches on the ball which is what everybody refers to as ‘letting the game be the teacher!'”
Play is 7 v 7 including a goalie beginning in the 10U division and 9 v 9 at 12U. At 14U, teams play full-sided 11 v 11 games, while at 18U they switch back to smaller-sided games that help keep all the players involved and the action moving.
LYSA, founded in 1980, is a non-profit organization dedicated to growing the game of soccer. It is the only recreational soccer organization in Fayette County affiliated with U.S. Soccer and U.S. Youth Soccer. And it’s the only rec league with USSF licensed referees.
