Last week, the Lexington Catholic girls’ soccer team hosted a number of the best teams in the state for it’s annual Lady Knights Challenge Cup.
No. 1 Sacred Heart won Saturday night’s final 1-0 against No. 4 Manual.
The host Knights, ranked 11th in the latest Maher Rankings, went 2-1 in the midseason event, dropping their first game to Manual, but finishing strong with a win over No. 17 Assumption and a PK shootout decision over No. 20 Simon Kenton.
No. 14 Tates Creek lost 2 out of 3 in the event, falling 3-1 to Sacred Heart in the opener and getting a PK win over Simon Kenton before taking a 2-1 loss to Assumption on Saturday.
Commodores Coach Ally Tucker said the experience of playing in a tourney with such competition will be good for her team as they move forward.
“We played Sacred Heart on Monday, and teams don’t get much better than that, so that was a real test for us to see if we could compete,” Tucker. “We stuck with them and it was tied with 15 minutes to go. We felt like we learned that we’re right there. We still have some work to do execution-wise, but I think it’s been a good confidence builder to compete against such good teams this week and get to see where you are.”
A number of games from the tournament, including Saturday’s final were streamed live and are available on replay on Prepspin.com’s Youtube channel.
